Why is
Severe Vomiting Sickness
Relieved by Hot Showers?

Excessive Pathogenic Heat

One of the strangest and somewhat rare side effects of long-term cannabis use is known as Severe Vomiting Sickness. This is when, after a number of years of use, the marijuana enthusiast goes into extreme bouts of vomiting that only seem to be relieved by compulsive hot showering.

Why would this happen?

The pathogenesis of unbalanced marijuana, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, is a condition of excessive pathogenic heat that enters the stomach, heart and kidney channels.

Cannabis has a hot and ascending nature. This tendency flows in opposition to the Qi of the stomach, whose nature must remain moist and descending to function properly. Over time, the hot and ascending nature of cannabis can overwhelm the moistening and descending powers of the stomach, especially in individuals who are weakened in this area to begin with.

Earth is the Mother of Metal

But why would a hot shower relieve this curious and extreme side effect? In TCM physiology, earth is the mother of metal. An excess of energy in the stomach earth channels can be relieved by bringing energy to the child channels, in this case the lungs via the skin and surface capillaries. Redirecting of the circulation allows the pressure of the ascending nature of the marijuana to be temporarily relieved.

The treatment for cannabis-induced Severe Vomiting Sickness is to moisten and cool the stomach and descend the stomach Qi.
